Mahmutlar Dentist First Step for Retainer Treatment
Retainer treatment is a method used to maintain the new positions of teeth after orthodontic treatment. This treatment prevents the teeth from returning to their old positions (relapse) and makes the success of orthodontic treatment permanent. Here is a brief information about the process:
Purpose of Treatment:
- To fix the new positions of the teeth after orthodontic treatment.
- To preserve tooth movements and jaw harmony.
How to Apply?
- Movable Retainer: It is prepared in the form of transparent plates and is used at night or for certain periods of time.
- Fixed Retainer: It is fixed by gluing a thin wire behind the teeth and is permanent for a long time.
- Usage Period: The duration varies depending on the situation of the case, usually can be used for several years or longer.
Advantages:
- It prevents the teeth from returning to their former position.
- Protects the success of orthodontic treatment.
- It is easy and comfortable to use.
Post-Treatment Care:
- If there is a fixed retainer, special dental floss should be used to clean between the teeth.
- The removable retainer should be cleaned regularly and used as recommended by the physician.
- Regular dental check-ups should not be neglected.

Retainer can be summarized in 3 main steps:
1. Planning:
Your dentist will perform an initial exam and evaluation. This includes examining your teeth and jaw, taking X-rays, photographs and impressions. A treatment plan is then created that is customized to your needs and desires.
2. Active Treatment:
This is the phase where the selected orthodontic appliances (such as brackets or clear aligners) are applied and the teeth are actively moved into the desired positions. Regular adjustments are usually made every 6-8 weeks to ensure progress. This phase usually lasts 12 to 30 months, depending on the case.
3. Reinforcement:
Once active treatment is complete, orthodontic appliances are removed and the retention phase begins. Retainers are used to maintain the new position of the teeth. Regular check-ups may be performed to monitor the stability of your new smile.

Dentist Tolga Torun Answered For You
The length of time you use a retainer varies from person to person. Full-time use is usually recommended for the first few years, after which night-time use may be sufficient. Your dentist will determine the most appropriate length of time based on the stability of your teeth.
If the use of retainers is neglected, the teeth may return to their old positions. This may cause you to lose the results of orthodontic treatment. Regular use makes the success of the treatment permanent.
The removable retainer should be cleaned with warm water and a soft brush. Denture cleaning tablets can also be used. For the fixed retainer, dental floss or special dental cleaning devices should be used and oral hygiene should be observed.
